This charming caper film about a legendary thief who must pull one last job is the debut feature film of Juliusz Machulski, director of KINGSIZE and SEXMISSION, two of Poland’s favorite comedy hits. Set in Lodz in 1930’s, the film follows the exploits of Kwinto, a safecracker and thief from the old school who takes a sense of pride in his work and remains loyal to his crew. The once-trusted associate is now a bank president, and Kwinto’s plan involves one last big heist…. Julie Barnes (Claire Danes), Pete Cochrane (Giovanni Ribisi), and Lincoln Hayes (Omar Epps) have one thing in common: They’re young adults on the wrong side of the law, arrested for crimes of robbery, grievous bodily harm, and arson. Taken in by mentor and father figure Captain Adam Greer (Dennis Farina), they are assigned to a special task force working undercover for the police–the logic being that these kids can get into the hip young establishments that the older, more cynical officers can no longer infiltrate. Ill-suited to each other and chastised by their peers, this rogu squad is forced to come together when they uncover a seedy world of police corruption. Not knowing who to turn to, the kids are left with their wits and street cunning (they’re not allowed to carry guns) to overcome mounting odds against their survival.
With Hollywood facing increased pressure in 1999 to curb its screen violence, this film arrived with perfect timing. The only problem is the film was aimed at an audience that never saw the early-1970s TV series that inspired it, and this dubious recycling resulted in paltry returns at the box office. Nevertheless, this is an enjoyable action movie with some noteworthy performances–especially from Omar Epps, who shines with strength and vulnerability, like a young Laurence Fishburne. The energetic camera work and throbbing soundtrack also stand out, along with some retro styling and a plot that’s refreshingly free of excessive violence or gratuitous special effects. –Jeremy Storey

Meanwhile, a deathly ill boy bargains with a delegation of heaven-sent searchers–at least that’s what they seem to be. Is this Fargo meets Touched by an Angel? That’s the peculiar feel of this otherwise unclassifiable movie, which veers from academic artiness to wacky blackout humor. Who can explain the restaurant where diners must guss the lone menu item? Howards End is E.M. Forster’s beautifully subtle story of the crisscrossing paths of the privileged and those they disdain–and of a remarkable pair of women who can see beyond class distinctions. Dramatic and tragic, but also surprisingly funny, this James Ivory film focuses on a pair of unmarried sisters (Emma Thompson, who won an Oscar, and Helena Bonham Carter) who befriend a poor young clerk (Sam West) and, without meaning to, ruin his life. Meanwhile, Thompson also makes the acquaintance of a dying neighbor (Vanessa Redgrave), who leaves her a family home in her will–which her husband (Anthony Hopkins) destroys. But, ironically, he meets and falls in love with Thompson, even as their paths once more intersect with the increasingly miserable young clerk. Nuanced acting, gorgeous but muted cinematography, and a beautifully economical script by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, which also won an Oscar. –Marshall Fine

Making no attempt at factual accuracy, Ned Kelly is still an engaging action film with its heart in the right place. You don’t need to be a student of Australian history to know that a movie about the life of the notorious folk hero and outlaw is not going to be a light-hearted romp through the outback. Injustice, persecution, and unlawful imprisonment are the meat of his story, all presented here with not too much of a rose-tinted perspective amid generous doses of obligatory action. Rebellious teenager Ned Kelly (Heath Ledger) is wrongfully imprisoned for stealing a horse and, when he returns to the bosom of his large Irish family, finds that the police won’t let him go straight. After being accused of a crime he didn’t commit, Kelly is left with no option but to go on the run. Accompanied by his gang (among them Orlando Bloom) he robs banks to survive and also to gather the money to free his family from prison. There is some considerable romanticizing of the story and the man himself, du in part to Ledger’s affable Robin Hood-esqu working-class hero portrayal. Bloom is wide-eyed and daring as Kelly’s main man, and Naomi Watts as his married mistress has the thankless task of breaking up some great action sequnces to play the unnecessary love interest. Originally filmed as a Mick Jagger vehicle in 1970. –Kristen Bowditch

Outland is another in a long line of Westerns retooled for science fiction. Writer-director Peter Hyams (Capricorn One, 2010, Timecop) restages High Noon in outer space, with Sean Connery as O’Neil, the marshal for a settlement on one of Jupiter’s moons. While investigating the deaths of some miners, O’Neil discovers that mine boss Peter Boyle has been giving his workers an amphetamine-like work-enhancing drug that keeps them productive for months–until they finally snap and go berserk. When Boyle sends killer henchmen to neutralize the lawman, O’Neil is unable to get the miners to back him up. Outland is no classic, but it offers solid suspense in an otherworldly atmosphere. Also starring Frances Sternhagen, James B. Sikking (Howard on television’s Hill Street Blus), and John Ratzenberger (later to become famous as Cliff on the sitcom Cheers). –Jim Emerson
